Nearly a decade after it released Warcraft 3, Blizzard still churns out updates for its seminal PC real-time strategy (RTS) game from time to time. Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne 1.24b Replay: Night Elf Huntresses vs Undead Ghouls

What happens when you pull off a Night Elf Huntress rush and see it fall apart before your eyes? You get a counter rush in the form of an Undead ghoul rush of course. What to you do?

You run.

You run back to your base and hope your micro can save your failed onslaught and hopefully win you the game. Which was what happened.

AMAI 2.54b Now Out (AI Mod for Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne 1.24b)

Since the recent 1.24b patch has rendered AMAI incompatible with Warcraft 3, its creator (a programmer who goes by the alias StrategyMaster) has released version 2.54b.

Advanced Melee AI is a third-party AI mod for the realt-time strategy game Warcraft 3: Frozen Throne. It greatly enhances Warcraft 3's AI's micromanagement abilities. While it's nowhere as good as Warcraft 3 pros, it does provide a sufficient challenge for casual players of the game.

Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne 1.24b List of Aspects to Master

It's been a while. Typhoon Ketsana really effed up my ISP, dampening my desire to post the past few days. During this time I immersed myself once again in Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne 1.24b. Six years has passed since its release and I still have yet to master the game.

A friend of mine once said "Why play Warcraft? You can just play DotA. Why the need for buildings when you can just whale on each other a hundred ways until next Friday?" I feel sad that a lot of people feel this way. The Frozen Throne is one of the deepest games out there. You can't feel it if your opponent is one of those non-pro players (not that I am one) who mistakenly think that it still is the age of "let's-see-who-amasses-the-largest-army-first-while-we-all-turtle-in-our-bases."

Warcraft 3 is a flurry of bloodshed and an elegant theater of death all at the same time. The measured but rapid harassment strikes of pro players is beautiful to behold and one can't help but feel inspired to learn the ways of the gosus.

I've posted a lot of questions in the WcReplays forums and a lot of those people there are helpful. I've managed to pick up a trick or two and applied them in a LAN game with one of my friends.

Also, a list of what I feel to be the areas in which I lack after the jump (this list will be updated as I continue playing).

  1. Spam clicking - They say it improves your micro. I'm a bit skeptical about this but hey, if a whole mob of ladder players say so, it must be true.
  2. Refocusing - oftentimes I focus-fire with my ranged units and the opponent dances it away, I don't shift targets, resulting in my formation breaking and the opponent's heavier melee troops collapsing into my ranged lines. Add the fact that the ranged units will chase their target around, wasting precious seconds not doing damage to the enemy ranks.
  3. Forgetting to upgrade weapons and armor - must group the Hunter's Hall (I'm an NE player) with the barracks (Ancients of War); doing so might fix this --- the presence of the HH icon everytime I call up the 'rax will be sure to remind me of uprgrading my army's doodads or claws, or the leaves that cover their.... nvm.
  4. Forgetting to buy items for my heroes - what's an NE hero without Boots of Speed? A staff of TP is also vital. Circlet is "situational" according to some WcReplays posters.
  5. Not abusing Staff of Preservation - self-explanatory.
  6. Switching teleportation items between heroes - "Help meee! I'm daieyiiing!" shouted the Panda. "Use your staff!" the DH shouted. "Oh sh-- it's with me." "I should have never joined you! I should have stayed with my bamboos! PETA will have your head for this! I ---*" Sploorch.

How to Install Advanced Melee AI (AMAI) a Downloadable AI Mod for Warcraft 3: Frozen Throne

>>> See videos of how the AMAI behaves in a match.

***************************************
Please note that I did not create this AI mod. While I have played with this AI mod for Warcraft 3 for several months now and have suffered no problems, I cannot provide any technical support if Blizzard suddenly invalidates your CD key and bans you from Battle.net. Install at your own risk.
***************************************

1. Download AMAI Player Edition from HERE. Choose AMAI Player Edition. (I chose the Player Edition as it has installation instructions that I deem to be "safe." The reason? Read on.)

2. Unzip the file.

3. In your Warcraft III\Maps folder, create a sub-folder. Label it with something informative like "AMAI" or "Amai maps."

4. Copy (CTRL+C) maps that you would like to play against the Advanced Melee AI mod in. Paste it in the sub-folder you have created. This guarantees that the maps you use in Battle.net won't be modified. This is also the reason why I like the Player Edition better.

5. Run AMAI.

6. Browse to where you have put the maps you would like to play against the Advanced Melee AI mod in. Select the maps (CTRL+A).

7. Click "Install AMAI."

8. Start a Single Player Custom Game. Navigate to the sub-folder you have created and choose a map to play in. Enjoy! If you are new to Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne, prepare to get your ass kicked! >)_)

Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne Gameplay Videos: Night Elf Vs Human in Echo Isles

Uploaded videos of another game again. This is still against a "Normal" AI. In these Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne gameplay videos, which show me playing as a Night Elf against Humans, my micromanagement has improved a bit, but I'm still dissatisfied with my skills. At least this time I haven't forgotten to buy Boots of Speed and a Circlet of Nobility.

Mistakes:

  • Not using "Alt" during skirmishes, resulting in critically wounded enemies still swinging at my forces
  • Not watching resources; I could have pumped out more Dryads. The Druids of the Claw came out very late.
  • Got fixated on micromanagement, resulting in a very delayed Tier 3
  • Not picking the right targets with the Naga's Fork Lightning
  • Not designating a newly-trained unit to a (Ctrl) group
  • Not pushing the advantage by erecting Ancient Protectors and an Ancient of Wonder next to the enemy base

Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne Gameplay: Night Elf Mirror Match in Echo Isles ("Normal" AI)

I made two videos showing Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne gameplay. The videos - which total 13mn 56s - show my meager micromanagement skills against a "Normal" AI (Gaaaah! How does Moon do it?). (Edit: Whoa the numbers changed! What's up with YouTube? Meh.)

These are not meant as comprehensive Night Elf strategy guides since I am very much a beginner at Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne; I just uploaded these in YouTube to remind me of my mistakes.

If you're a total beginner, you might get a tip or two here (like using the Ancient of War as a tank when creeping). If you are a vet, have a good laugh:

Mistakes:

  • Ancient of Wonders erected too late (the Staff of Preservation is very much a standard item for Night Elf players)
  • Not using items from the Goblin Merchant (Boots, etc)
  • Not shifting targets when the AI dances a critically wounded unit from the front (chasing a unit down will collapse your formation into the enemy lines. Very bad if you're going up against an enemy using strong melee units)
  • Not expanding early
  • Rushing a Night Elf base is a very bad idea. You can of course, pick of a few wisps if the enemy army has wandered far but fighting a protracted battle near their moon wells is a disaster in the making.
  • Setting the rally points of unit-producing structures to a hero who has gone home to heal/buy items. Always transfer the rally points to the hero who's/that's (things not human mwehehe!) laying down destruction on the enemy front! Reinforce the poor sucker in front!
  • Not switching off the Naga's Ice Arrows ability when there are no more enemy units alive (waste of mana)
  • Not using Fork Lightning often
  • Too slow in destroying enemy moon wells
  • Too slow in pulling out a critically wounded hero
  • Too slow in staffing (Staff of Preservation) out units
  • Using a Scroll of Town Portal when I could have just left my army at the enemy base while retreating my Demon Hunter
Constructive feedback (whether positive or negative) are very much welcome.

Again, how does Moon do it? Gaaah.

Download Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne 1.22 Patch

Those guys at Blizzard never cease to amaze me. Five years after Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne got released, they're still releasing patches for the said game. If that's not support, I don't know what is.

Download Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne 1.22 patch from Gamespot. The patch weighs in at 57.3Mb and given that an incremental 1.21b-1.22a was released last July, this new one might be a stand-alone version of the previous patch release. The page of the downloadable Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne 1.22 patch contains a ReadMe that shows a list that's nearly identical to the previous patch so it all checks out.

This is giving me the itch to install the thing again.

Where to Place Map Files to View Warcraft III: Frozen Throne Replays

NGL One: Source for Professional Warcraft III Maps

It just shows how new I am to this whole competitive Warcraft III: Frozen Throne scene. (Not that I'm planning to being one of the best lol; I have a day job AND a family --- two factors not conducive for practicing everyday. For the record, it's been two weeks since I last Mana Burned someone. Sad.) I tried watching a Moon replay and the game won't start complaining about some missing maps. I asked about in the forums and a member named Worpex directed me to the NGL One download page. (Thanks man!)

It's a site about professional gaming. Interesting. I'll browse around when I have the time...

Here's the page where you can get the WC3 Map Pack Season 2008.

Here's an error message one may see if he doesn't have the map necessary for viewing replays.

Take note of what the error message says. Once you have downloaded the necessary map, put it in the location stated by the message. The above says Maps > Download so I put the map (in this case it's "NGL-S08-TS.w3x") in the download folder. However, some replays strangely look for their maps in unusual locations. In the picture above, I had to create the path "Maps > Download > NGL > NGL > NGL > SEASON08" as the game was looking for maps in that location.

I finally got the replay to run. I notice immediately that the loading page had been altered. Soccer and Reign --- two names I frequently see in good replays.

A personalized banner! Cool. How do you make one?

It's amazing watching these pros play. Here, the Night Elf player was outnumbered but he beat back his Undead opponent in this early game skirmish.

Warcraft III: Frozen Throne Micromanagement Resources

Run Forrest! Run!

One of the things that Frozen Throne owes it success to is its successful implementation and heavy dependence on "microing," ---formally known as micromanagment --- the skill needed to pull out critically wounded troops out of the heat of battle to save resources and deny enemies from gaining experience and scoring a decisive stroke on a player's army.

This alone makes Warcraft an all-time favorite for those who favor microing or an overly complex game for those who don't. I was one of the latter.

Right now I still favor Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War as, because of its implementation of squad-based "units," the game requires less hand dexterity than its Blizzard-made competitor. But still, there's boundless fun to be had in watching your fingers fly as you frantically "staff" (Staff of Teleportation) that bear away from a fight or run your dying Demon Hunter away as your range troops put up a token resistance and kill a few footmen before disengaging to fight another day.

Here are some resources that may improve your microing skills:

Kitae's Micro Wars 1.2e Balanced - This is a small, downloadable, map for Warcraft III: Frozen Throne, which pits your army against the AI's for 24 consecutive matches. There is no base-building, just a series of skirmishes. After each one resolves, you and the AI respawn with a different set of troops that belong to a different race. Handy! I hope there will be another version of this map, one that lets you customize what race you want to control for the entire 24 matches and the option to dictate what race the AI can use for the series of skirmishes.

Please let me know if there's a new version of this map; I tried Googling but found no other source for it except Epic War. (Note: As with any unofficial site, please scan the files with your anti-virus software before using them. Download and use at your own risk.)

Night Elf is Weak in Tier 2 (T2)

Period.

Well it's not exactly period and I'm not exactly in the position to say that but one of my friends says that Nelf is good in t2. I find it otherwise. Night elves do not have good tanks/meat shields at the start of tier 2, having only dryads and druids. Druids of the Claws can't transform to bears yet at this stage and it's best to do hit-and-run tactics at this point in the game, with more parts running.

This is still subject of course to debate but in my opinion, as a non-pro player, I find it really hard in tier 2.

Mr. Quakers shares the same opinion:

A note about this post however: a lot of people, myself included, rarely use Night Elf Huntresses due to their paper-thin defenses. (And large model size?) So this is a point that is debatable too. I'm NOT saying he's wrong just that the prevalent preference of WC3 players deviate from the huntress build.

This post was taken from WCReplays while this article serves as a reminder for me to:

  • Harass like hell at tier 1
  • Run like hell at tier 2, but bleed the enemy at every chance
  • Tech to tier 3 asap and get bears or the cyclone skill.

The Micromanagement of a Warcraft III: Frozen Throne Newbie

Poor man's entertainment?

Okay, so I've still not purchased a videocard yet. (See? I am fair in my procrastinating; even my hobbies get victimized by it. Kidding.) 90% of my games won't run but marvel of marvels, Warcraft 3 does!

What follows is a series of pictures summarizing my battle with the AI (Normal), which chose the Human race for this session. I am very happy with the match since my newbie microing skills assured me a 0% casualty rate until the middle part of the game.

I still get my head handed to me on a silver platter everytime I play in Battlenet but nonetheless, trouncing the AI is still very satisfying.

Start of the game: Ancient of War taking root near a creep camp. (For those who do not know, an Ancient of War is a Night Elf Treant that also serves as the race's barracks.)

Ancient of War (AoW) used as a tank. Note that it's usually SOP to train a single archer first (shown here netted by the trolls) before uprooting an AoW and letting it lead the fray.

The first harass with only a single archer in tow. Notice the overwhelming numbers. Some experienced players seek out the Human's war party but I opted for this simple economy harass by attacking the peasants. (seen here with two Footmen) Nelf players rely on the Demon Hunter's (DH) speed and the archers ability to Hide in night time.

The Human's war party arrive to the rescue. Faced with a tide of steel, I did the most prudent thing. I fled.

The third of my archers comes out of training and rallies directly to my hero. More firepower! Seeing that one footman had only little hit points left, I reengaged the enemy.

Lol! After killing one of the pursuers, I turned tail again; Robin and his merry vixens must get to Sherwood Forest fast! (Yes, Robin is really the guy's name, "Darkweaver" is just an alias meant to scare dumb-as-shit footmen.)

Finally got to higher ground. Superior visibility! Upon reaching there, I turned back once again and rained a volley of arrows upon the humans.

"On hemmed-in ground, use subterfuge.." Fighting in my sacred grove. Had to micro like hell here. Heal, retreat line of archers, DH takes brunt, heal hero, retreat line of archers again... Busy, busy. 'Had to shoo away those labanderas gossiping by the moonwells; needed those atabai real bad...

What's this?! They're retreating! The blackguards are actually retreating! After them half-na--- I mean, merry vixens of the Sherpaps Forest!!

They left their waterboy behind! Free XP! At it, my ladies!!

What they've got in those wells is some pretty strong sh|t.

Knowing that their forces are still convalescing, I charge back to their base...

Drawing out the enemy

After bleeding the enemy bad, I decided to flee again. Take note that I have still with me my six archers. My Ancient of Lore (AoL) is now up.

First casualty; an archer dies. Tut. Have two Dryads with me now though. Superior units --- their endowments are only covered with leaves. The merry vixens get jealous and are not so jovial now. They focus on their art and got Improved Bows.

These waterboys. Tsk.

Details on what they're doing: http://youtube.com/watch?v=nNJN8r1YamY

Twelve minutes into the game, I begin my first siege in the hopes of doing some major damage before the AI's army arrives...

No dice.

Faced with a hero, a tower, and foot and riflemen: what's a blind guy to do?

One creeping and a skirmish later:

Range units disengage to distance themselves

What I love about the Nelf race: focus fire!

Got bears. Now for the endgame.

"In death ground, fight." A Blood Mage unleashes his final spell ineffectually against magic-immune dryads.

The final battle: While my bears worry a footman to bits, a group of footmen arrives from the rear, taking my range units nearly by surprise. Robin metamorphoses into a demon. Nifty things, those cans of spinach.

Range units disengage again while Robin and the bears of Sherpaps Forest continue their attack. On the bottom part of the screen you can see the humans' Archmage dying.

All my units then turn their attention on the hapless footmen. It was pretty much gg several images back.

Hope you had fun reading! (The effects of having one's videocard fried --- 'does funny things to your brain.)

And no Warcraft III: Frozen Throne is NOT a poor man's game. It still is unrivaled in its depth and complexity. Kudos to Blizzard for producing a game that can run well on a wide range of computers. Also thanks to the people at WCReplays for providing replays; a lot of the tactics above were learned from them.
