Free Comics: Endless Space 2 (4X, Turn-Based Strategy Game)

The Endless Space 2 developers have released a 4-part comic book series and the entire collection is free. The comic books give you a deeper understanding of the four of the eight major factions in the turn-based strategy IP.

TotalBiscuit's View of Brutal Doom

Friends who refuse to play games that have sub-par graphics disappoint me to no end. This whole "Why play outdated games/games with retro graphics when you can play modern games that have amazing gameplay mechanics? Two birds, one stone." mindset all but ensures they will never ever get to play great classics like Half-Life 2, Dwarf Fortress, the very first F.E.A.R., the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series, Knight of the Old Republic 1 and 2, and Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne.

The Homeworld IP Is Seeing a Resurgence with the Remastered Collection and Homeworld: Shipbreakers

So several months ago, I saw this video:

thought it too good to be true and didn't pay it any heed. I was thinking it wouldn't disappoint me if the project crashed and burned but I didn't emotionally invest in it.

The Pros and Cons of Continued Development of Early Access Games

So someone complained on the Folk Tale Steam forums:

"This was the first Early Access I brought, I actually didn't realise it was early access, I just liked the sound of it and clicked straight to pay (I will never make that mistake again). Anyway almost 2 years on, its still not ready, is this usual?

After realising it was early access I wasnt too concerned because I assumed there would be a few months max before it was finished, surely these things are regulated right, how foolish I was?!" [sic]

Why Dwarf Fortress for Me Is Still One of the Best Games Even Up to This Very Day

So I found this comic strip, which details a battle between dwarven and elven armies---and a big @$$ dragon:

Art by Tim Denee. Taken from: http://www.dfst.org/en/stories?page=1

In all probability the above happened during one of Tim Denee's playthroughs. Why am I convinced that is so? More fantastical things have happened. Check out the guy's story about the near-demise of Bronzemurder, another of his fortresses: http://bronzemurder.timdenee.com/.

OpenXcom Developer Announces That v1.0 Is "Coming Soon!"

This went under my facilities' radars: last May 6, the developer of OpenXcom announced that version 1.0 of the open-source reimplementation of Julian Gollop's phenomenal turn- and squad-based PC strategy game is coming soon.

Last May 30, the official site of the free PC mod posted a blinking teaser that reads: "Loading OpenXcom 1.0..."

Why is this news exciting and why should you care?

Early Game Access Gameplay Video of the Survival Horror PC Game The Forest

I posted this on Newsvine:

A group of four people came up with the idea of fusing elements from I Am Legends, the survival horror genre, and Minecraft and the result is

a premise that greatly intrigued me.

I decided to support them by purchasing an Early Access for the video game. Though it is still in its Alpha phase, understandably the game

still has numerous bugs (most notably the save feature being broken as of May 31, 2014) and still is in a bare bones state. However, the

thirty or so minutes I spent with the game is easily worth the $15 I shelled out. See the video to see emergent gameplay at its finest.

Freeware Foray: Cry of Fear

Horror games for the PC are a dime a dozen. However, horror games that are free AND have garnered awards AND a large following are hard to come by. Enter Cry of Fear, a freeware survival horror Half-Life (ONE) mod that has now been converted into a standalone free-to-play PC first-person shooter.

This is very exciting news for me as free game downloads have always been a passion. To discover that a game I initially couldn't play (given that I've never bought the very first Half-Life) has now been released as a standalone is news indeed.

You might wonder what the fuss is all about with this free to play offering. Well:

That got your attention.

I've been immensely entertained by this survival horror romp---and also immensely frustrated by its bugs. Currently, the game intermittently crashes every 20 minutes or so and this sorry state has proven to be a major pain to my progress. I'll post a review soon as I'm done with this game.

Video and links to the freeware game after the jump.

My Let's Play Transcendence v1.1 Series (Freeware Space Trading Exploration Combat PC Game)

[Update 3 (March 5, 2013): Added "The Story so Far" Part 12 description]
[Update 2 (February 27, 2013): Added "The Story so Far" Part 11 description]
[Update 1 (February 26, 2013): Added "The Story so Far" Part 9 and Part 10 descriptions]

If you haven't been taking a peek at my YouTube channel (click HERE or see the link at the upper right part of this site), you've clearly missed my "Let's Play Transcendence v1.1" series.

What I've written on the videos' description boxes:

Transcendence is a 2.5D free to play sci-fi PC space trading game that runs along the lines of the Space Rogue, Elite, Eve Online, and the X (Beyond the Frontier, Terran Conflict, etc) series. Though weighing in at only a tiny 17MB, the game provides surprising deep gameplay for its size, letting players have free reign on what they want to do---play as a simple drifter running supplies among the many space stations; as a guardian of the myriad galactic enclaves; and even as a bounty hunter hunting down space outlaws.

Join me as I embark on my journey to the Galactic Core. I need all my luck as there are many threats the vastness of space harbors, chief among them a low YouTube viewer count.
 Here's a sample video:

Impending Release: IMBACORE's Let's Play Transcendence

Just a heads-up but I'm now currently editing the first part of my "Let's Play Transcendence 1.1." I've long since want to play this game but now that its creator has released version 1.1, now is the perfect time do a Let's Play for this freeware full version PC space game.

The game is a sandbox-type video game where you can do anything that you please, trade goods, escort lumbering capital ships, and/or hunt down rogue spacecraft. It weighs in at 17 megabytes but for a 2d game, it's a looker.

Image taken from the official Transcendence site

Once I upload the YouTube video the segments will appear on the IMBACORE YouTube channel.

Runic Games Has Released the First Torchlight 2 Update

I've been playing a lot of Torchlight 2 lately and I must say this is an awesome game. (Diablo naysayers please don't launch a tirade here. Please know that the Torchlight 2 devs made up Blizzard North; they were responsible for developing the first two Diablo games. I'm planning to play both games so relax. ;) )

That's my Engineer. A slain Undead Champion lies destroyed in the foreground.

Runic Game has truly hit the ground running; barely a week after the game's release, they've released the first patch. You can see the changelog and the first video of my "Let's Play Torchlight 2 HD (Engineer; Normal)" YouTube series after the jump.

Scratch that. By the time you read this, it has already launched. What is Black Mesa: Source? Why should you care? If you're a hardcore gamer you know what it is. If this is the first time you've heard of this free full version first-person shooter game that just launched, you should still have an inkling of what it is just by its title alone if you're a person worthy of the title "gamer."

Nvidia GeForce 306.02 Benchmark Results

Okay let me skip to the verdict: if you're using an Nvidia card, replace your current driver with this one. While the benchmark numbers don't show much improvement (with the X3: Terran Conflict Rolling Demo benchmark test churning out exactly the same figure as the Tweakforce driver I benchmarked a week back), things are a lot smoother with the new Nvidia GeForce 306.02 driver. Recording  my "Let's Play Darksiders 2 PC HD" is now a more enjoyable experience. Here's a sample clip:

Black Mesa Source's Impending Launch (Release Date Announced)

So I told several people it didn't crawl under a rock, croak, and die but nooooo they wouldn't listen. Ah sweet revenge. Black Mesa Source, a freeware full version Half-Life 2 mod, is a Source engine-powered remake of the very first Half-Life. I've been yammering about this science fiction-themed mod for years now (since 2008 to be exact) but it wasn't until May of this year that I've heard news that it's going to be finally released (after their missed 2009 deadline). Now though, their website is showing a countdown timer and things have just gotten real all of a sudden. The free PC shooter is going to launch this September 14.

Here are some comparison screenshots of what you can expect from this downloadable PC game:

Want to know what the finer details? Click "Read more." The download link can also be found after the jump (bearing in mind that you can't get it before September 14, 2012).

Tweakforce Releases Xtreme-G 305.68, an "All OS" Driver

Tweakforce has released Xtreme-G 305.68, a tweaked GeForce driver. What's peculiar about this release is that it has a version for each and every Windows OS starting with XP, something that Semp (the owner of the site) hasn't done in a long time.

This driver gave me a performance boost in a Lightsmark 2008 benchmark run. Also, it's a boon for Darksiders 2 players looking for an antialiasing fix as the Darksiders 2 3D profile in this driver works---enabling FXAA smooths out all the jagged edges in the game (as of August 28 4am GMT+8 THQ has yet to fix this).

You can see the latest benchmark results and the link after the jump.
