TotalBiscuit's View of Brutal Doom

Friends who refuse to play games that have sub-par graphics disappoint me to no end. This whole "Why play outdated games/games with retro graphics when you can play modern games that have amazing gameplay mechanics? Two birds, one stone." mindset all but ensures they will never ever get to play great classics like Half-Life 2, Dwarf Fortress, the very first F.E.A.R., the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series, Knight of the Old Republic 1 and 2, and Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne.

But who am I to tell them otherwise right? I'm just Retroburn, the creator of this website, a newbie YouTuber. Enter John Bain, aka TotalBiscuit, who may have just inadvertently shown them the error of their ways in his praise for Brutal Doom, a mod for id Software's seminal work, Doom:

"Don't dismiss it as an attempt to recapture a bygone age [or] some kind of a ridiculous nostalgia trip. To treat it as it currently is—if I were to assess this right now, let's say that this wasn't even Doom right? If I were to assess this right now with the current batch of shooters on the market [and] didn't even know what Doom was, I'd say 'You know what, oh this is a really nice indie shooter! Graphically pretty weak but my God does the combat feel satisfying! There's loads of enemies, the level design is so very good [and] thank God I don't just have to go down a bloody corridor! Thank God for that! How amazing is it? That the game is actually offering that in this day and age?' That's the kind of thing I would say."

This statement, which all but oozes praise from its every syllable, says a lot from someone who calls himself the "Cynical Brit" and who starts most of his videos' title with the abbreviation "WTF."

And if you've missed that last bit in his message, here it is again:

"...the level design is so very good [and] thank God I don't just have to go down a bloody corridor! Thank God for that! How amazing is it? That the game is actually offering that in this day and age?"

If that's not a stab at the deplorable state of some of the first-person shooters today, I don't know what is.

Not everything is about graphics. And if you base everything on visuals, you're missing a lot. Play classics. Play Doom. Play Brutal Doom.
