Battletech - MechWarrior 4 Downloadable Full Free FPS PC Game

This PC multiplayer shooter game still is not free YET but this downloadable full free FPS PC shooter game WILL BE released as freeware on the 25th anniversary of the franchise. Either that, or some company's going to lose face big time for reneging on their announcement...

[EDIT: The game is now officially freeware. Check out THIS POST.]

(Links to the official sites---the founder and the publisher's--- of the downloadable full free FPS PC shooter game are found after the jump.)

-----------------------------------------

The enemy was coming, climbing the hill that separated us at a ground-eating pace. The computer identified his BattleMech as an Owens, and by his energy emissions, it was---in all probability---carrying a couple of Medium Lasers and Long-Range Missile modular launcher pods. I moved my 'Mech deeper into the grove that I had chosen as my screen.

I knew the stand of trees could not hide me; his electronics was as good as mine and, judging from his purposeful stride, my presence had already lighted up his electronics.

He topped the hill.

I fired my LRMs while quickly maneuvering for a clear shot with my lasers. My 'Mech jerked as two salvos of smoke-trailing destruction kicked from my launchers, streaking towards the lone silhouette standing on top of the promontory. The angry swarm wove around the intervening vegetation, steel locusts hungry for ferro fibrous-covered fodder.

He automatically took evasive action, his LAM system furiously providing point defense---THERE! I grabbed the clear shot, and three shafts of coherent light stabbed out, daggers of energy that slivered and melted reactive and reflective armor…

Welcome to the world of MechWarrior, where soldiers strap into ambulatory weapons delivery systems known as BattleMechs.

Based from FASA's pen-and-paper tabletop strategy Battletech game franchise, MechWarrior focuses more on the men and women who pilot the juggernauts of destruction that walk the 30th century.

In both the multiplayer shooter PC game and pen-and-paper versions, the franchise had players tweaking their engines of destruction, replacing modular weapon systems with ones of their liking. This freedom of modifying existing 'Mech builds (within specified weight limit restrictions), held great appeal and the franchise was wildly successful in its heyday.

However, in January 2001, the company closed. What seems surprising (and painful to BattleTech fanatics) is that the company didn't fold due to financial reasons. The founders closed down the company as they felt the pen-and-paper industry was going downhill. Microsoft and Activision still continued to make games a few years after that but FASA ceased the production of
BattleTech boxed sets.

In December 2007, however, one of its founders, Jordan Weisman, announced that his venture, Smith & Tinker, was resurrecting the MechWarrior franchise. On July 9, the company's site announced that they will be releasing the multiplayer PC shooter MechWarrior 4---and all its expansions---for free.

Curious, I've downloaded the demo version of MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries and gave the PC FPS game a go. For its time, the free FPS offers superb graphics and an insane amount of customization. In it, players can swap weapons systems, add in different systems (point defense, jumpjets---yes, Justin! Jumpjets!---IFF jammers, etc), and choose types of armor and engines, to name a few of the plethora of tweaks available.

It might seem a minor thing compared to the whole picture, but I really like this game's audio effects for the laser weapons of the 'Mechs --- every time I fire a Large Laser, I can almost feel the very air being seared as those powerful beams of light lance out.

These are just light 'Mechs but the feel of pounding the earth and tearing apart trees as you bound through the landscape is very satisfying. Awesome? Very.

Poem in Honor of Dynamix, the Creators of the First-Person Shooter Game Tribes 2

This is not mine.

Some dude made a poem in honor of the now defunct Dynamix, the creator of two of the most unique first person shooter games of all time, Starsiege: Tribes and its sequel, Tribes 2. I've made articles about the series and the latest, "Downloadable Free PC FPS Multiplayer Shooter: TribesNext - Full Game Tribes 2" can be found HERE.

The poem:

When November died in ninety-eight
I went dancing in the rain
And if you came to waltz with me
You'd never be the same

The clouds above were dull and grey
But we were bloodied red
As eagles we flew above the hills
Swooping o'er the walking dead

On grassy hills hollow armor's strewn
Where the tired could no longer fly
So many came, so many slew
So many paused to die

Ten years have passed and still we war
For pride and honor alone
Now ground down to a steely corps
Time's attrition gnaws our bones

The battle's rage is all but spent
Our soldiers worn and weary
Yet rally round the banner men
And remember days less dreary

When November died in ninety-eight
And we went dancing in the rain
And all who came to soar with me
Would never be the same

- 'Nikolai'
In Honor of Dynamix

The reference to "November ninety-eight" is what strikes me; that's the release date of the original Tribes, the game that started it all.

At Least I Tried

This was done in under 10 minutes and is unedited. I don't know if I'll refine this or not but I hope somebody will enjoy reading this. :P

"Well, at least you tried." Roflarx chuckled. The last of the Mark VI prototype's armor plating fell off, clanging hollowly in the stillness of the foundry. The gears, now exposed and unsupported, soon followed in a rain of circular metal pieces that pitter-pattered on the plates lying helker-skelter on the stone floor. Soon only the mana powerstone remained, a glass cube that powered the golem's actuators. It hung suspended inside the mass of metal that was the golem's frame; all semblance of the construct being a war machine now gone.

"Meh," Deermalx, the gnome artificer replied, sticking out his tongue,"I told myself it wouldn't work but I fooled myself." He took a playful swing at his companion with a bottle of lambanog but the latter dodged this with ease, laughing at the artificer's failure all the while. Sticking his tongue one last time at Roflarx, Deermalx climbed up the scaffolding surrounding what remained of the machine and snatched the glass cube from its housing. Instantly, all lights winked out and only the forges' fires illuminated the small gnome-made cavern.

"It's time to house this in another construct I suppose." Deermalx said with cheerfulness. Roflarx however, noticed the tinge of wistfulness in the other's tone. He didn't let that drag on however. He bopped the lead gnome on the head and the two soon chased each other around the foundry like two little children who just destroyed a sand castle.

"At least you tried haha!" Roflarx laughed in earnest, and ran out of the foundry and into the midday heat of the bustling streets of Praetoria.

Tribes: Vengeance Fan-Made Military Science Fiction

This is a sci-fi short story I made that's set in the Tribes: Vengeance universe:

You freefall for several meters and land on a slope, spinfusor rounds exploding ineffectually all around you. You ski down the mound, your repulsors defying gravity even as your 500-pound power armor easily shrugs off enemy fire. You jetpack up another hill, gathering momentum as your telemetry sensors tell you the objective is close.

Somebody armed with a chaingun is chasing you, judging from the staccato you hear several meters behind. You pay the enemy soldier no mind; the objective is all. You crest the hill, activate your energy pods, and catapult through the air. You look down and you see the enemy base, naked --- naked like your love the day these blackguards landed on your country while their capital ships rained down tactical nuclear rounds on your world.

You close your eyes that have suddenly brimmed with tears and you see brown skin swathed scantily in red sheets; lips that moaned, sighed, and murmured your name; and a lithe body that moved with you gently, slowly, in that steamy room so long ago.

It was your honeymoon but they chose that day to burn away your home, your family, with particle cannons and nuclear bombs.

Your energy pods run out of juice and with the sun behind you, you freefall again, a falling Angel of Death come to slake its thirst for retribution.

"This is for Mary you m*****f*****s," you whisper, thumbing down the trigger. The mortar you're holding quietly coughs out a round, which arcs lazily down, screaming promises of dismemberment and obliteration...

Food for Thought

When a friend reaches out and gives you a torch with which to light the darkness but refuses to accompany you on your journey because of rules and commitments, should you feel sad? No. Let the torch give you strength; always go forward and from time to time, look at the light and remember. Remember and be glad that someone cared immensely to give you it.

I have faith in you.

Godspeed.

I now walk in the light with my partner but I have not thrown away the torches people gave me. To these people, my thanks.

I am Happy.

Rewind to the year 1995 and I was an Atenean high school student, desperately memorizing the last stanza of the Xavier Pledge. Students were slinking back into the safety of their classrooms like sea anemones to rocks at low tide. Word was spreading like wildfire: Fr. Ampil, for the next few weeks, will be walking imperiously around the campus, snatching students like so much ripe apples from an orchard and making them recite the Pledge. Anyone not being able to recite the damn thing by heart will be shot where he stood.

Those weeks were terrifying. The Gestapo treatment was so effective that now, 13 years later, I can still remember the last two lines:

"To give meaning to the lives of others.... .... and with that, I will have given meaning to my own."

Oddly enough, the lines grew on me. So much that at one time, I drew blood for my beliefs. My knuckles still has scars from that event. I am not proud of it but sometimes one needs to do something for other people to wake up.

I am proud however, when best friends say "you had a part in molding me." I am proud that my wife is not the same person she was when we first met, so adamant I am that she become a devourer of knowledge (lol!) like me.

I am also happy that I imparted something to someone. It is my hope that in the immediate future (Whoa! Oxymoron?!) , I'd see changes.

To that person, thank you for sharing, thank you for listening; you made me feel alive in a different way that brought back memories of bygone years. I'll never forget. I hope I did something meaningful for you too. Thanks.

"Shallow." Solanthar Ilitha'knos, the Hammer of Praetoria, stood on a hill, his metallic legions spread out behind him. "All they ever stood for, is to destroy and defile. No life, no meaning." Below, demons amassed, a gibbering wave of corruption that whispered promises of pleasure and suffering.

The wizard-king put on his battlecrown with his left hand. The right --- still wrapped with the colossal Gauntlet of Titan Strength --- gripped Shadowsmite.

"Kahailakk!" He spoke the word of summoning and a hundred archangels appeared overhead, their Gigablades humming.

"FOR THE LIGHT! AND FOR PRAETORIA!" He charged, his midnight blue armor and white cape shining in the midday sun. The army made up of celestial beings and gnome-made constructs speared headlong into the dark wall, disintegrating everything it touched...

2 Gigs!!!

I was walking one rainy day last week and I came upon this little critter all drenched in the rain, its fur plastered over its small but healthy frame. It was staring sorrowfully at a puddle of water that was mere inches from its whiskered face.

It carried a brown shoulder bag.

I stopped short, amazed. It saw me looking at it from the reflection in the water. Slowly, it looked up at me and said, in a nonchalant manner, "hai." Its expression mercurially turned into one of amusement and --- of all things --- cockiness; as if it knew (and rightly so!) that it had me mesmerized.

OMG, a talking furball! I quickly looked around but not one of the pedestrians had heard. I quickly scooped the thing up, put it in my bag with only its head poking out and headed back to my flat. I gave it some warm milk, rubbed it dry with a clean face towel (won't use it again), and stared at it. It stared back.

It stretched on the table in quite a bored manner. And then --- it spoke again.

"Eets tyme to repai u" it said. Before I knew what was happening, it scampered to my PC, slid the side panel open with a deft twist of its front paws, and squeezed in. The case toppled over but before I could shriek to all the gods of gaming, it poked out its head from the rear panel. It smiled at me and said:

I won't be posting until maybe Friday. I'm enjoying the improved graphics of my games at the moment. >)__)

(The picture is NOT mine. A friend gave me this pic so I don't know who owns this one. Lolcats? Please contact me if you do not wish this picture to be displayed on this site.)

Archmage Forum Posts

Tales from an age long gone.....

What follow are posts I made when I was one of the leaders of the Praetorian Crusaders, a role-playing Reincarnation guild. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I did playing the game that inspired me to write these mini-stories.

(Notes: 1. These are impromptu ones; I made them right before or after playing sessions in public cafes so they are not as polished as one might think they are. 2. One word here is an intellectual property of mine and I have replaced it with "lieutenant." 3. Except for Solanthar and Sylvrdark, all other names are not my creations but the names of guilds/characters of fellow Reincarnation players; some are downright weird :D . 4. The opinions of my character are not my personal opinion but are spoken in true role-playing fashion. I hope no members of the IA or Ronin guilds will take offense. 5. These were made as separate forum posts so they will have gaps among them. They follow a single guild war however.)

I think these posts were about a guild war we had with the IA guild.

THE FOLLOWING CONTAINS PART OF THE STORY IN WHICH SOLANTHAR AND THE LATEST REINCARNATION OF THE lieutenant QUEL'THALAZ (an undying Nether Archmage) AFFLICTS A VERDANT MAGE WITH OFFENSIVE SPELLS. LARDUMIR, WHITEWING AND RHILANTHOS WERE INVOLVED TOO AND HAD LARGE PARTS BRINGING ABOUT THIS BUT THAT IS FOR ANOTHER CHAPTER........

Two figures scan the forests of an IA verdant mage. Where once stood verdant fields and towering trees, the landscape now has fused in a macabre way in shades of dead brown and festering purple. Its people ---- tiny specks seen from a distance ----- seem to be wandering around in a stupor as their forests and homeland slowly melt in a puddle of blight.

The mage named Sylvrdark turns to his companion, a Praetorian lieutenant. "It's done Slave of the Light." His companion merely nods, coldly satisfied at the spreading rot, taciturn as always. Then his robe-covered emaciated body stiffens and points to the horizon miles from the dying forests. Sylvrdark turns slightly and his eyes glow with holy light. He nods, expecting this.

"The Ronins come," he says "and while they are dishonorable, being the maw that grinds all those that fall from favor, they nevertheless have my respect as worthy opponents and formidable warriors. This is a siege we would do well to stay away from and do not need." With that the lieutenant makes a gesture and the Praetorians disappear.

The forests of the IceAge Verdant mage, now bracing the coming might of the Ronins, continue to melt, wilt, fester and die.

-----------------------0000---------------------------------------

On another hilltop the mage named Sylvrdark materializes, this time with an ilithid. It is a different hilltop, miles away from the forests of McGravy, where he was sorely disappointed in the IA's successful dispelling of the lieutenant's spell, but the scenery was the same ----- a dying, writhing landscape.

"We'll make ssssssure it ssssticksss thisss time Ilitha'knosssss." The mind ripper and the Archmage keep a vigilant watch as the carefully placed sleepers inside the enemy realm do their work --- inside an invisible gigantic sphere of malignant magick that is marked only by the putrefying flora and fauna in its influence.

The towers of knowledge and vaults of arcana start to crumble.

Yes, Sylverdark thinks, I hope it sticks this time.

---------------------000000------------------------------------------

"Ilitha'knossss!!" the ilithid fairly screamed, "look!" All thoughout the land they stood guard over, the fauna starts to grow and prosper in a resurgence that approached chaos. As if on cue, peasants start to appear in large numbers though still sparse in relation to the realm they are desperately trying to revive.

The White-robed mage starts to cast a spell again. Sylvrdark once again feels the foul essence of the black wisps of growing energy he is conjuring forth when suddenly on the field below him and the mind ripper, a familiar figure appears. It quickly utters words of power. They could see the realm's nodes start to glow with pure white mana when a pall suddenly hits the surrounding area. The Praetorian lieutenant had recasted quicker.

For a fraction of a second, all is still as with an imperceptible silence the raging malevolence of a Death and Decay swirls into the hapless kingdom. Then the silence is destroyed with a loud boom as thirteen forts collapse; the nodes have continued to charge, innocently bringing about their owner's near demise.

The last of the settlers weren't so lucky. The nodes stop pulsating, but the damage is done.

"It'll stick now," Sylvrdark turns to his assistant, "though not in the fashion we had mistakenly foreseen." The mind ripper laughs, a sibilant laughter that echoes unheard in the desolation below.

-----------------------------0000-------------------------------------------

Sylvrdark watches with grim satisfaction as 5 more forts crumble. In the valley near the borders of the stricken IA realm, the Praetorian lieutenant still maintained his spell that prevented the IA mage from breaking free of the deadly grasp of Death and Decay.

Only a single fort now remained.

"Come Bi'Marrzul", he says, beckoning the mind ripper, "he is inconsequential now. We have sieges to make on other IA magi more worthy of the might of our armies."

The Praetorian lieutenant remained, maintaining his hold on spells that slew all within the confines of their thrall.

One fort.

(Note: Hmmm, I don't know what was on my mind when I wrote this. Why'd the mind flayer stay? Lost, lost to the oceans of my turbulent memory the reason remains.)

(Note 2: Ah, I got it figured out now, there are three persons in the above narrative, Sylverdark --- who is also known as Solanthar ---, Bi'marrzul the Ilithid/Mind Flayer, and Fallenn, the Praetorian Lieutenant who is also known as Quel'thalaz.)

-------------------------0000---------------------------------------------

"As Dron, Quest and Suncrusher have betrayed us millennia ago, so now do their fold betray them." From the topmost observation chamber of Flarefortress, Sylvrdark watches the last of the rearguard of the armies of Yohan desert the realms of Suncrusher. "I may have abandoned the Ascendant Order because of this plane's imbalance of power but we see the Hand of indifferent Sun time and again eh Rhilanthos?" He turns to the Verdancy adept who was busy guzzling his flagon of lambanog. The two took in with satisfaction the ignominious disarray of the Ice Age's beleaguered lower magi.

"We share a rich history, Quest, Suncrusher, Dron, Uthiel and I." Sylvrdark pauses, reminiscing ages long gone. Then he smiles and says, "Why, you can almost write a play with it!"

--------------------------0000---------------------------------------------------

A tugging in the fabric of the magical field prevalent in the plane cut short the mage's reverie. Even leagues away, they felt the last of Murmur's forts succumb to an offensive spell. Before Rhilanthos could react, a freezing cold that always accompanied the coming of the immortal known in this age as Fallenn billows across the chamber.

"He moved," the immortal lieutenant says simply, his first words ever spoken in this war.

------------------------0000--------------------------------------------------

EPILOGUE:

Solanthar squats on the top of a hill, the Standard of Praetorius driven into the ground beside him. Fallenn had given it to the Ilitha'knos in the last hours of the war. Asked why, the lieutenant had simply shed off his battle armor and donned on the rotting black robes that had swathed him when he first came to Praetoria III and swore fealty to the Light. The crimson and black of Mage-monarch Uthiel swirls in the breeze. Solanthar looks at it with reverence and a tinge of nostalgia.

He stands up, unclenching his right fist, servos whining as the Gauntlet of Titan Strength unfolds. Its mana powerstones glint in the sun as the Hammer of Praetoria reaches out and pulls the Standard out of the ground effortlessly. Solanthar hefts it. "Years ago, I was given this gauntlet as a means to handle your great weight and use you not in just leading but in battle as well."

He gently murmurs words of activation only he knew and with a sound akin to that of a drawn sword, the Standard tranforms itself into a giangtic battle axe thrice the height of a man.

"Only I know your secrets Shadowsmite," Solanthar says grimly, "and now we are complete as Fallen is, having returned to his Nether ways." He scans the horizon, his eyes glowing again with holy light.

"Now we wait for our Mage-monarch's command." Behind and above him, thousands of angels in crystalline armor hover, giga-blades unsheathed.

YM Flavor Text

"Whoever said that artificers do not get bored with all their tinkering around for new war machine ideas?" --- Guardsman Vu-an Tahrmad of the Outer Gates of the city of Waladire

All those years of playing Magic: The Gathering have caught up to me. Now I'm writing flavor text for my YM avatars. Weird eh? Here are some that I made:

For my Desert Dreadnought painting:

"The mana-powered behemoth broke through the canyon wall, holding white death in its corroded frame. It gave a bellow, and a white bar of cleansing fire lanced from the rust-encrusted aperture that was its maw. The undead legion scattered..."

For the Clockwork Dragon painting that I and one of my friends made:

"It wheeled around and swept down, its solar cells glinting in the midday heat. Tubes made of hekalite flexed and contracted, and talons the size of longswords splayed out. The construct went in for the kill..."

And of course the one I made for my rough UFO: AI PHALANX soldier text:

"Rifleman Wilkes fired shot after shot of uranium-depleted rounds as the South African village started to disintegrate under a sizzling hail of energy bolts from the UFO. Things were starting to pour out of the ship, carrying particle-based weaponry. F###, Wilkes thought, the UN wasn't prepared for this! F###, no one is! A hut exploded on his right, as blue death once again spat from the hulk's laser batteries..."
