Wizards' New Direction with Magic: The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012

[All screenshots here are from the 2011 version of the PC game.]

So Stainless Games and Wizards of the Coast have just released new decks for Magic: The Gathering – Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012. I'm very happy with "Forest's Fury," a green deck focused on quickly fielding huge treefolk that buff each other and/or spawn more creatures. While this concept is nothing new--certainly sliver and goblin decks have introduced this to players in the late 90s--it's definitely something that the aforementioned developers are continuing to bring to the table (pardon the TCG pun) decks that are more geared towards establishing victory-assuring combos. They're not by any means decks that have the same complexity as Kai Budde's red-artifact deck that he used in the 1999 MTG World Championships, much less Jakub Slemr's black control deck, but this speedy turnout of new decks is starting to revive my interest for the TCG.

Read more after the jump.

I started to slow down on purchasing Magic cards in mid-2000, when it became clear that the rich kids had a greater probability in winning matches. I mean some of those guys were crazy; some spent nearly $75 every week on booster packs. While the diversity of decks that came out during those times have been unmatched so far, the competition was stiff to the point that trying to win was nearly an exercise of futility. There I was spending about $5 a week on packs and some of my friends were spending more than ten times that amount. I was packing an Armageddon-less en-Kor deck and they were unleashing decks that had Living Deaths, Wraths, and decks that had that infamous Tradewind Rider combo.

The last straw was when I noticed most of the players were copying decks made by pro players. That did it for me; not only did that raise the bar for deck building, it also stomped dead creativity.

Fast forward to the future and a friend gifted me Magic: The Gathering – Duels of the Planeswalkers 2011. I played it for a while (barely reaching four hours) and then stopped. I was expecting full deck editor but the game didn't provide that. Sure it had unlocks, but it didn't allow you to swap out inferior cards; only add the unlocked cards in. It was a strange design that broke the deal for me.

This one surprised me. The Kor are back? Nice.

Barely a year has passed since that gift when this new incarnation arrived. Magic: The Gathering – Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012 still doesn't provide players to build decks from scratch but at least now it allows you to swap out old cards for unlocked ones. While this initially put me off, what Stainless Steel and Wizards of the Coast are trying to do gradually dawned on me: here at last is a version of the game where the playing field has been leveled. No longer do you have to be at the mercy of rich kids who can shell out an insane amount of moolah buying booster packs. The decks might sometimes be frustrating in their simplicity sure, but at least you won't get burned to cinders by someone who has got a trust fund backing up his collection of cards.

I'm hoping that Stainless Steel Games and Wizards would release more combo-intensive decks that are in the same mold as those of Kai Budde's and Slemr's but I also recognize the need for a more developed AI if we are to see decks like that in the future. Also, releasing decks that rely on combos might be too weak if they are to be tailored to be on the same level as the existing ones in terms of win probabilities.

Still this direction that Wizards is taking might just be the very thing that will bolster the TCG community.

This was one of the best turnarounds that almost happened. At 3 life, I casted the sorcery Overrun, winning me the game--or so I hoped. The next thing I new, the AI casted Unsummon on my 10/10 wurm. You got to hand it to Garfield for creating one awesome game.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution Deviating Gameplay Types Trailer

I've been doing a Deus Ex marathon in the hopes that I can finish both Deus Ex and Deus Ex: Invisible War before the 3rd installment in the PC first-person shooter series comes out. The thing I love about the Deus Ex games is their deviating gameplay scheme---each of their levels offer different ways for a player to beat it, whether it be silent takedowns or a full-on guns blazing approach.

Here's a trailer:

"The level design in deus ex human revolution support many different approaches."

This PC FPS game is going to be awesome.

Hopefully, Deus Ex: Human Revolution is going to be the second game I will review. Imbacore's taking a new direction; I'm going to review modern, retail games too, not just freeware PC games.

For the first of these, see my FEAR 3 review.

League of Legends' Kayle

All my friends hate this hero. I like Kayle though; popping an ulti on the team's DPS in the middle of a 5-versus-5 skirmish, and eliciting "FUUUUUU---!"s from the opposing team make for great lulzfests.

People stuck with the late 80s "all-video-games-are-super-mario-brothers-clones" mentality should really wake up. LISTEN TO THE COMMENTARY AND WIDEN YOUR HORIZONS. More than two decades have passed and if you think things have stagnated in the industry, you might want to rethink your location; living under a rock does have its disadvantages.

The Effects of PC Video Games Withdrawal

No I'm not stopping. I've just been busy this week that I haven't really sat down and played a good round of Half-Life 2 (still have to finish Half-Life 2: Episode 2) or X: Beyond the Frontier (a PC space simulator game).

I posted this on my FB account:

Today I put a red ant inside our microwave oven.

[Guttural voice] "Little ant, today, I would like to play a game."

After 2 min, I opened the thing and found a tiny black smear. I smiled but then gaped in amazement - a red ant raced past and crawled underneath the oven.

Me: "Whoa. Déjà vu." My wife: "What did you just say?" "A red ant went into the oven, and then another scurried by that looked just like it." My wife: "Switch! Apoc!"

Half-Life 2 (Unofficial) Movie Trailers

Scrounged up some fan-made videos. These are top-notch and can almost fool you into thinking they were made by some major studio.

The Half-Life 2 fan-made movie trailers after the jump.

Beyond Black Mesa:

Things I found amusing/meritorious:

- Adrian Shephard is the main character of a Half-Life expansion
- A strider! In a low-budget trailer!
- They have it down pat:

  • The grenades' trademark red glow
  • The resistance armband
  • The "caste" graffiti in the final frames of the trailer

>>>Click HERE to see Half-Life 2 console command CVar tweaks that I use

Escape From City 17 Part One:

Things I found amusing/meritorious:

- Like in the game, there are structures/objects in the film that have highly-saturated hues. Kudos to the art director/cinematographer.

They have it down pat:
- The firearms and CGIs are perfect, including the PA system
- Like in the game, Combine soldiers emit this high-pitched sound when they die

Ancient Precursors: Before Borderlands There was S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl

I got amused that I totally forgot about one of the apparent inspirations for Borderlands. Released in 2007, the first-person shooter put players in the role of a mercenary-scavenger who has to delve into the ruins of Chernobyl, a radioactive "hotspot" that's spewing out mutants and creating paranormal activities. The game is a shooter-RPG hybrid in that it features an inventory system; players can fill this with loot they'll scrounge up in the course of the game.

Borderlands might offer unique cel-shaded visuals set in a post-holocaust setting but years before it got released, the first S.T.A.L.K.E.R. (yes, it is now a series!) rocked the gaming world with its immersive atmosphere, player-controlled plots, and---need I say it?---multiple endings. It must be the closest thing to Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion with guns.

(Borderlands fans: don't get me wrong. I play the game too. With teammates who revive you, coordinate with each other, Borderlands is a blast to play! This is just a tribute to one of the innovative "elders" of the gaming industry.)

League of Legends - Wife Ownage

[Updated: Changed the title. Putting up posts when you're bleary-eyed is a bad idea.]

My friends and I played League of Legends this night. This was the first time the session was done in a cafe so we had some good fun. Add the fact that my wife killed me twice, it was a blast.

Downloadable PC Full Version Freeware Real-Time Strategy (RTS) League of Legends - First Victory!

So my wife was still cooking breakfast. I couldn't go back to sleep on an empty stomach. 'Decided to play a practice game online with nine other players.

So I finally got on a team where only one was feeding himself to the opposing group. We won:

I killed four enemy champions, made 12 assists and... didn't die. (Click on the pic. Check it out; 0 deaths. Way to go for a support champion.) Wooohooo! Kayle the Judicator's skills really make her one tough, metal encased mama.

The wonders of starvation I guess. :D :D :D

Manually Cleaning Your Registry Can be Dangerous - Back It Up with ERUNT

So I was out of action for several days as I cleaned my registry beyond the usual norm --- I hunted down every trace of VLC, K-lite, and DivX and poof! My PC intermittently froze every time I tried viewing por--- I mean documentary and kid-friendly Pixar films. Luckily, I have a time machine in the form of ERUNT, a downloadable on-demand registry back up freeware. I made an article about ERUNT a year back.

Future-Proof Upgradeable Motherboards - Bad Idea for Budget Gaming PC Owners?

It was all a blasted mistake.

Last Saturday, my PC DVD rewriter finally died. I couldn't believe it. My budget gaming PC's on its last months and the son of a gretchin of a DVD rewriter died! One more component to buy for my obsolete gaming rig! It dawned on me then that maybe this whole idea of "next year I'm going to buy a souped-up system that's going to last me four-five years. This way I'll save a lot of cash" isn't so good after all.

The reason why---and how much I've spent for my obsolete PC after its second year---after the jump.

Last weekend's meltdown (yes, even my stupid ISP went into a digital stupor over the death of my DVD drive) convinced me that people on a budget shouldn't hang on to their
budget gaming PCs after their machines' second year.

Here's what I bought after my PC's second year (yes, I know the Nvidia video cards are ancient but I've undergone two relocations in a two-year span and they have not been friendly to my pockets):

BFG 6600 GT OC - 7,500 PhP
Palit 7300 GT - 4,300 PhP (after the BFG died)
2GB RAM upgrade- 6,000 PhP
2 keyboards - 900 PhP
2 DVD Rewriters - 4,600 PhP
---------------------------
23,300 PhP

The morgue (the games are very much alive though! Except for F.E.A.R.'s Alma. Yes, she's very much dead.)

Egad! That's about $485! I can nearly buy another low-end, budget gaming PC with that amount!

This is a lesson for me --- keeping a low-end budget gaming PC well after its second year is a bad idea. Three years should be a stretch.

After your PC's second or third year, you can sell it for 50% off, save for the other 50% of the amount, and then buy a new one again. This way, you won't buy for parts for an obsolete system once its components begin dying from age. If you sell your old one for 10K-12K PhP, I'm sure a lot of people will dive for it (tip: to prevent lethal brushes with the Angel of Conscience, don't overclock your components if you plan to sell it to your relatives).

Of course, do check what the PC gaming industry has to offer you if you're on the second year and want to upgrade. Buying another system on a particular year may or may not be a good idea. Take this year for example. Here in the Philippines, X58 motherboards are VERY expensive. If you're an owner of a budget P35 gaming system, it might not be a good time to upgrade --- buying a P45 motherboard will only bring you minimal gains (unless you're going for a Crossfire setup) and buying an i7 PC system will be too expensive (if you're going for a budget gaming PC). It's better if you wait for prices of the next-generation X58s to go down rather than buy a new rig. (Of course, if you can afford them, knock yourself out and go on a splurge! :D)

Me? I'm abandoning all the fancy dreams I have for a "high-end low-end" gaming PC and buying the cheapest the PC gaming industry has to offer. After two-three years I will---the gods of gaming willing---ditch it and buy a new budget gaming PC.

Trust me, from my luckless experience, this path is cheaper --- not to mention you get a shiny, brand-new relatively kick-ass PC gaming rig!

The Harmony Gold (Robotech) vs Fasa (Battletech) Conflict - A Ghost From the Past Floats From its Unmarked Grave

A MekTek administrator publishes his thoughts about the Harmony Gold (Robotech) vs Fasa (Battletech) conflict in light of the former's recent protest about the MechWarrior 5 trailer using one (? 'Not sure) of its tabletop war game mech designs.

A quote and the link to the editorial post after the jump.

MekTek's Supermike has this to say about the Marauder mech design (and several other mech designs) that is soon to be taken out from the upcoming MechWarrior video game (if the PC first-person shooter mech simulator is to see the light of day):

For many years I was upset over, what I perceived as, Harmony Gold's "tyrannical" protection of their intellectual properties. How many people's favorite 'mech was the Marauder? After speaking with a couple of people "in the know" on this subject, I have come to change my views significantly.

The first thing to remember is the artwork in question was NOT created by FASA. It was the work of the people that created Robotech. Why shouldn't they want credit and the rewards generated through their work?

Right on Supermike! As much as I like the Marauder and one of the Land-Air Mechs, I innately have this aversion for "crossovers," regardless if whether they are legit or not. As a digital artist myself, I feel keenly for stolen concept art.

Besides, the Harmony Gold conflict forced Fasa to take on battlemech tabletop figurine designs that wildly deviated from the "anime super-robots" feel. This deviation evolved their mechs into grittier, "more plausible" designs that IMHO, proved to be a boon for the company.

Where I Work: Comics! World of Warcraft Figurines!

Yesterday, the office suddenly turned into one awesome geek heaven-utopia.

Picture showing why after the jump.

One of the World of Warcraft figurines belongs to the MIS head. Our CEO---who also plays World of Warcraft---gave me the Alan Moore WildC.A.T.s volume. (Gewd loard! The twists at the climax! I wasn't able to sleep last night!)

And yes, yes, the author is THE Alan Moore, author of the Watchmen graphic novel. The "How to Draw and Sell Digital Cartoons" book is mine (hmm yes, sometimes I make digital art. Samples HERE and HERE). The Galaxy 9800 GT was bought by a Nathrezim who works in the office (he wanted a kick-behind, budget video card so I recommended a 9600 or a 9800).

So kids, what your parents say about video games is complete bull. Knock yourselves out and be a CEO/manager/MIS head one day. And own World of Warcraft figurines.

Complete Secret Files (Videos) of Area 51, the Downloadable PC Free FPS Multiplayer Shooter From Midway

A few days back, I posted my review of Area 51, one of the free best PC FPS downloadable freeware shooters. Produced by Midway, the same company that produced the Mortal Kombat series, the game has been recently released as freeware, touting high production values (to the delight of PC FPS fans). I played it, completed it, and found to my dismay that the game kindled the completist in me.

Thanks to a GameFAQs guide, I managed to unlock all of Area 51's secret files.
