War Rock Update: New Map and Weapon

Seventeen megs --- this is one large update!

It's been a long time since I've made an article about War Rock Philippines --- my country's leading MMO first-person shooter PC game --- ever since they did something that rendered the game unplayable for me in my favorite server. Tsk. Methinks I may need to change my ISP. Anyway, here's

... a new War Rock map, Pargona. I haven't checked it out yet, but by the looks of it, I think it features land, sea, and air combat. And yes, there's a new and shiny helicopter thrown in to boot! There's also...

... a new War Rock weapon, the anti-air stinger. It comes with a nifty lock-on feature. Heh! So long Rickenbackers! This should be fun!

And oh, the blood and gore I mentioned a while back that had parents flying into fits of frenzy and despair? It's baaaaaaaaaaaack!

May 15 -- Cabal Philippines CBT and War Rock Patch -- Glock?

... and a map with a large body of water?!!

GM JohnnyBlaze gave clues that a new rapid firing pistol is going to be integrated into War Rock Philippines with the patch today. All bets about the purported new War Rock weapon are on the Glock. No significant clues about the new War Rock map however.

Also, they changed the download screen:

4 megs of it!! I wonder what's new. I hope to the gods of gaming that super cool water effect makes it with this patch. And lookit that sniper babe! Eurasian eyes for the win!

Hmm goes with the colors of my site. Cool.

EDIT A MINUTE LATER: Oh sh|t that's an old one. That's Blue Storm, the map I derisively label as "Timoga" what with its blue-and-white cold spring resort feel. Effer. Paint colors aside, it's a good map though; I was just hoping it was something new. Owned by a perspective change. Tut tut.

Also, Cabal Philippines has just launched their closed beta test this day.

May 1: Another Foray into War Rock's Bullet-ridden Maps

Rusty.

Here's what I get for not playing this game for two weeks straight and then playing on-and-off afterwards: in one match I had a 1:4 kill-death ratio! 0_0 Tsk. Anyway, here's one of those "moments":

Three little piggies all lined up. Nah, as much as I want you to believe it to be so, I killed only two of those charging through that gap; a fellow trooper killed the first one.

Ooops. Sorry wrong multiplayer game. I suck at this. (300ms ping anyone?) Still deployable turrets, inventory stations, and mines --- not to mention jetpacks --- make this game one of a kind. Well, three actually, what with its prequels, but let me discuss that some other time. Back to the topic...

When meeting with that sexy medic date of yours, dress to impress. And make sure to use Glo metal polish. Here's War Rock's M7 combat knife with Bloom enabled. Pretty lights... can't resist...

War Rock April Goodies: Promos, and a New PX Item

A whole cache of goodies for the end of the month of April

There's a new PX item that increases your Stamina Points by 10%. Hmm, useful but I'd prioritize guns and other more useful PX items than this one.

What the---?! Knives?! A promo with knives? What about when the promo ends? These are going to become premium items too methinks. Not so useful for me; I so rarely find opportunities to use my fists --- at the end of the day, guns and vehicles win deathmatches, not melee weapons.

Knife, its like a knife... (Bleeargh! '80s song!)

Dundee should be envious of this!

Last but not the least:
A sale! Yay!

That's right, trooper, everything must go:

New Map and Weapon!

Well the jet's there but the governor is strangely missing...

No, it won't fly, the Governator has the keys.

The TAR 21 >> Accuracy: 40. Recoil 81. Tsk. It's another CQC weapon. One mean looking badass though.

A CQC weapon for a CQC map. Fitting. However, here's a caveat: with a recoil of 81, good luck using it in large maps. Pumps out 5.56x45mm NATO rounds faster than anything though. Paaain. Ful.

War Rock PX Item: M14 Anti-personnel Mine

Relax sonny, they're still there.

If you think these things will blow your enemies into vermilion clouds of gibs think again. This from the M14 Wikipedia entry: "while the blast wound from an M14 is unlikely to be fatal, it usually destroys part of the victim's foot, thereby leading to some form of permanent disability regarding their gait." True to that form, War Rock developers designed the mine to do minimal damage --- three mines won't kill a soldier having full health points --- but it does jar the enemy for a few milliseconds and permanently disables his ability to run until his next respawn; a severe disadvantage in a game where moving quickly and dashing for cover are two essentials for prolonged survival.

First time mine users may feel shortchanged when they discover the mines' weak damage factor. I felt that too but after playing with them for a few minutes, I soon discovered an immense tactical edge the things bestow --- they act as quasi-wards. (Or if you don't like the medieval fantasy analogy --- recon drones.) Everytime they blow up, voluminous smoke billows out. If you're hiding behind a corner, the smoke acts as an advance warning system. A dazed, wounded trooper will soon follow in its wake.

This soldier stepped on three of my M14s and still lived. A quick burst solved the problem.

How voluminous? This voluminous. It fills up almost half this room in Montana.

Also when player steps on them a global message will appear stating that a certain player's stamina points got damaged by mines; you'll immediately know their location regardless of where you are in the map.

They also act as a rearguard. You can cover one entrance while your mines are scattered at the other ones. This tactic is, needless to say, good only if paths to the area you are holding are few and you can easily predict where the enemy will likely be storming through.

Covering one doorway in Rusty Nails. Even if I wasn't looking, I would have still known a trooper just snucked in the other one.

This is a different player but it's still in the same map. I covered one area (the one in the preceding pic), and this soldier ran through three of my mines in this corridor. I ran up the stairs, leapt off the balcony, and surprised her.

The mines won't trigger if a teammate steps on them, which is good considering you can only three mines per spawn. They cannont be replenished by ammunition racks.

M14 mines are ineffective in dealing fatal damage to soldiers with full health ---- as they are in real life --- and I believe War Rock developers are wise in implementing it as such. To have done otherwise would have spoiled the game in many maps. However, the significant strategic advantage it gives is not something to be scoffed at.

War Rock Premium Maps

Erreseas

In the digital oceans of the servers of Amped, there exist corridors of rusty metal walls, trees devoid of leaves, and dusty buildings where only elv--- I mean players who subscribe for premium membership --- can do battle.

This article will detail War Rock premium maps and will be updated everytime new ones come along. For non-premium maps see this article.

Close-Quarter Combat Maps

* Dark Glow

This narrow map is composed of a warehouse divided into three sections. Long walkways, railings, and decrepit machinery are what comprise the lay of this map. Outside, there's a large yard. Objects where players can hide line two sides.

Outside you are drenched in midday heat....

... while inside, light and dark mesh and create a forlorn scenery you commonly see in dystopian-themed B movies. Van Damme must be here somewhere, hiding.

Meager light sources suffuse the third section. You could almost imagine slavering people shuffling out the doors shouting "braaaaaain!"

But then again, if that happened it wouldn't be scary. Those double scorpions? They own in this map. They own hard. Some higher-level chic who was toting a shotgun even quit minutes after a deathmatch with me in this map.

* Rusty Nails

The smallest War Rock map to date, which is mostly made up of narrow corridors and small rooms, Rusty Nails is a CQC player's dream come true. The setting sun in this map bathes everything in an orange glow --- so much that it alters the color the healing serums of the medics.

* Velruf

Velruf is very well designed. Composed of sharp turns, long narrow hallways, and two city blocks separated by an expanse, every class except for the heavy trooper will have a place here. (At the moment the 5th class only has anti-vehicle weapons for its primaries so using a heavy here will be difficult to say the least. Engineers with their mines and shotguns can go toe-to-toe with the assault troopers here.)

Beautiful, beautiful trees that are devoid of foliage...

... and a pristine suburbanscape --- everything screams fall.

Yes, fall!

I Spent my Birthday Gunning Down Soldiers

Scrooge would have fainted.

Days ago, I spent about 180 PhP on guns and PX items and played War Rock from 7am until lunchtime. I rented the Double Scorpions, Desert Eagle, Crosshair 2, M14 anti-personnel mines, the 5th slot (still have yet to use it), the 20%+ experience package, and a 7-day premium membership.

Dressed to kill.

I finally got around to playing in the map Dark Glow, revisited Velruf multiple times, (I love that place; very well-designed) planted mines, ventilated chest cavities, and generally wreaked havoc. :D

Highlights:

1. Experienced my first ever high-recoil weapon. Here's my review of the Double Scorpions.

2. Played a 2v2 match in Dark Glow that soon became a 1v1 match between me and some shotgun-toting lady. She quit after more than five consecutive deaths. I won by tactics alone as the Winchester is really powerful. That was one of the best matches I ever played.

3. Had fun with mines; I really like the way they're forced to just walk after stepping on two of the things. >:) Evil me haha!

Speaking of moments here are two that were simply awesome: (These happened weeks ago.)

There are instances where you shouldn't follow "stick together" commands.

Served my raison d'etre as a heavy trooper: two tanks and a motorcycle, owned!

War Rock Item: Crosshair 2

My first-year high school teacher would be happy to use this

"Aim better and kill faster." Hmm... I don't know...

War Rock Philippines has just released the PX item Crosshair 2 for all branches. How does it fare? These pictures will explain.

As before, the outer boundaries of this reticule push outward when you move; your accuracy will suffer the most when you run as opposed to crawling. Crosshair 2 sports more pronounced boundaries however.

This is what I really like about this game --- bunny hoppers are severely punished. No more annoying CS fanboys jumping around like lunatics. If you want a reality-based shooter, leave the Quake 3 tactics behind, please. (I never played CS: Source though so please feel free to correct me if this has been rectified in that version.)

Reticule tightens if you are still; here's the area where your first volley of lead will hurtle through. Don't read the chat lines in this pic; mind-boggling I tell you.

Don't stay in one area for long if you kill someone! They'll remember where you are lying in wait. Here, I rolled sideways and took this trooper by surprise.

The problem with this crosshair is that it nearly is an oxymoron --- a "cross" is formed by the white boundaries but there's definitely no "hairs" as opposed to the default reticule and Crosshair 1.

Budda budda budda! Danged text sound effects! Who remembers Sgt. Rock?

Here's where the problems with Crosshair 2 become apparent. With targets that are far away and no lines to let you instantly see where the red dot is in the heat of battle, your accuracy drops by an iota. Also I don't know if it's just me but I think the red dot is larger with this crosshair. It alleviates the accuracy problem a bit but comes with a price: try shooting at an enemy several blocks from you with a pistol and you'll see what I mean. They still drop like flies but damn if it isn't harder to do.

In the end, it's still a matter of preference but if you ask me, this one's perfectly at home with high-damage, low-accuracy weapons --- its outer boundaries' thick lines will let you see instantly how wide your shots will scatter while the absence of an immediately apparent cross will render it not as useful with weapons that need pinpoint accuracy like the MP5 or the P90, whose (relatively) low-damage rounds need you to score critical shots in the first fractions of a second when you encounter an enemy at close- or mid-ranges.

Still I applaud the designers for coming up with this. If I were to rent any of the following: a shotgun, the double scorpions, or the AK (when it comes to War Rock Phils), I'd definitely use this reticule.

Yes my teacher will really be happy with this. If you're awfully curious why, ask Scott. No, I don't mean the Linux guy.

War Rock Weapon: Double Scorpions

Engineer-biased series of releases :p

The last time I posted news about new weapons, it was about the anti-personnel mine for the engineer class. War Rock Philippines has just released the Dual Scorpion, an SMG for that same class.

They may look wimpy with their uninspired wooden handles but judging from their damage rating, these babies collectively pack more punch than the M4A1.

Medics can use these too. With this addition the value of the engineer in the battlefield just rose up astronomically; I definitely will try a mine-laying, DScorp-wielding engineer as soon as work is done this month. Let's see if the damage is that good. (And the accuracy and recoil that bad lol!)

Here is a Wikipedia entry about the
Å korpion vz. 61.

Update:
I finally got around to renting the things and I must say, I have mixed feelings about the DoubleScorps.

If the guns were horses, War Rock would be a confused mess of a rodeo. With a recoil rating of 84, this is one of the weapons that will have you struggling for control the first time you use them. I did manage to kill several soldiers using the commonly-used burst scheme, but you really are at a disadvantage when you engage an enemy that's more than fifteen or so meters from you. If the guy decides to fall prone, you are virtually dead meat; while you are firing in intervals at a small target, he will be unleashing a continuous hail of lead if he happens to be using a low-recoil weapon. It's a no-contest.

The weapon will force you to employ tactics and to choose firefights. It's very, very good in close-quarter combat. Tight corners, small rooms --- these scenarios are where the DoubleScorps reign --- and they do it like tyrants because recoil aside, these little monsters gobble up bullets. Everytime you push the trigger, you hear this wonderful, wonderful sound of --- I don't know, it's like two half-meter long toilet paper sheets that are made of metal being suddenly torn apart; you can't make out the sound of their hammers striking the bullets, it's just one fluid, "rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr" sound that induces nirvana in hardcore shooter fans.

850 rounds per minute: unadulterated bliss. Watch those casings fly out of their chambers!

There's another problem though. Why did I say "half-meter long"? Imagine yourself tearing a half-meter long paper into two pieces --- that's the time it takes for the double scorpions to empty their magazines.

And then you have to reload.

You have to reload two guns and pray hard that no one pops up during that interim. This makes the weapon inefficient for FFA matches or CQB ones that have a large amount of players on each side as you will quickly run out of bullets. This can be fixed by using an ammo box though but I'm fascinated more by the M14 anti-personnel mine.

To summarize, these weapons are very good in confined spaces but are not suited for open areas. These submachine guns shine in Close-Quarter Battle maps, use them there and watch your score jump. You have to learn to control them though as they are very inaccurate, relying instead on their sheer firepower to lay waste to enemy troops. In large maps, choose your battles carefully and stay away from open areas as you'll be at a sore disadvantage in medium- to long-range firefights. Here, you're better off with the default MP5; true, you can practice and get better over time, but at a steep price --- for players who favor Urban Ops or Battle Group maps --- it's just not worth renting.

Yep, accuracy will win the day in large maps with lots of open areas.

War Rock Maps

The Wanderer lost

New Map! This is the first War Rock map that is dimly lit and it's set in a subway to boot! The map is designed to be fought with literally run-and-gun tactics; camping will definitely get you killed as the map has multiple paths that will allow enemies to blindside you. Except if you are playing next to your teammates and/or you can coordinate with each other to provide cover fire, this map is best played by moving to different parts of the map everytime you kill someone.

Wait. I thought Zakarum Zealots and Blunderbores live here? Where's my +7 longsword?!!

Monsters are coming out of the tombs! How do you use this artifact?!! AAAAIIIIEEEEE----*

Now this --- this is a total winner. Good potential. 'Could be the next AYB phenomenon. Prepare your bases and move all Zig; they are back.

Yep, it's a subway all right. Where's the one that goes all the way to SM? I need to go to Datablitz.

Geezers

For some reason Nerbil reminds me of Half-life 2. It goes without saying that this map is composed of two bases, albeit this one is flanked by a bridge at one side and an open expanse in the other. A railroad track runs under the bridge and separates the two bases. The middle region is littered with huge containers. This is also the first War Rock map I have played in that has a weather effect, namely snow.

Players have complained however, that one side has a sniper’s nest and has the higher ground. Unless some fix could be made this isn’t really a well-balanced battle terrain.

Change the skins to rebels and stormtroopers, take away the present-time industrial look and this may as well be Hoth. Hmmm, a free sci-fi, team- and class-based multiplayer shooter. Oh, well, never hurts to dream...emoticon

(Later note: Now I understand what that fellow in the War Rock forums was yammering about the area in the Derbaran side where the healing rack is located being inverted. It is!! The open side, unlike that of the NIUs’, faces the enemy side! If you are one of the Derbarans and you are healing yourself using the rack, there is absolutely no cover for you from enemy snipers from the other side! Granted, this reduces down time for you as you can still fire from where you are standing and down enemy soldiers but still, if your members are newbies and there are pro snipers in the other side, it’s nighty-night scorey. Tut, tut, NIU operatives must have designed this one.)

Here’s a slightly older map. Nothing like midday gunfights to kick out the Doom 3 kinks…. (I enabled 2x anti-aliasing so this one’s cleaner to look at than the first picture.)

Here’s an old favorite of mine that’s popular with the majority of the game’s player base:

Two bases are separated by three warehouses in the middle with two hills flanking both sides of the map. Vehicles are available namely anti-personnel tanks, motorcycles, and humvees. Perfect for assault, heavy troopers, and snipers alike. Engineers won’t find much use here however, the map being too small — and consequently dangerous — for lightly-armed engineers to alight and fix vehicles. Medics are of course, too indispensable for any team to exclude in their lineup in any map.

Another golden oldie that was added way back in the early beta days of the game:

I like this one because of its multi-storey buildings that overlook large parts of the map. The map still forces teams to come up with a perfect balance of snipers and close-range classes though as the center is a mass of wires, girders, and small structures where combatants can hide before making sprints for the enemy base. Humvees are available making heavy weapon troopers valuable in teams.

The one shown below is my favorite if I want to give my eyes a rest. This is to date, the largest map released in the game and the vehicles in it are no less colossal. Tanks — "real" tanks — this time, rumble through the desertscape and are the keys to winning Ohara. This is also the only map where the efficiency of assault and medics are trimmed down somewhat. Heavy troopers, engineers, and snipers have heightened usefulness here due to the absence of shelter and the vehicle-centered gameplay. The firefights are less frenetic, being more deliberate as the wide expanse isolates close-quarter combat to the scattered neutral bases and these are far between. There are also motorcycles, humvees and supply trucks in the map.

If the one above is my favorite in the Battle Group servers, the one below is the one I hate most. The map is a long stretch of cityscape with narrow halls that are an assault trooper’s worst nightmare. While humongous fun can still be had from close- and long-range soldiers alike, it’s the drop in framerates that annoy me whenever the choppers show up. I cannot imagine how this affects cafe users, who largely compose the game’s player base and who are limited to using low-end gaming machines. I’m using a Pentium 4 though so this is a major factor. Still, all other maps, including Ohara, which is way larger, do not have this flaw. I wonder…

I like Zakhar’s style of having war machines in a very narrow map though as it introduces a gameplay that is unique from the others.
